A comprehensive molecular phylogeny of the Mortierellales (Mortierellomycotina) based on nuclear ribosomal DNA Naturalis
Wagner, L.; Stielow, B.; Hoffmann, K.; Petkovits, T.; Papp, T.; Vágvölgyi, C.; Hoog, G.S. de; Verkley, G.; Voigt, K..
The basal fungal order Mortierellales constitutes one of the largest orders in the basal lineages. This group consists of one family and six genera. Most species are saprobic soil inhabiting fungi with the ability of diverse biotransformations or the accumulation of unsaturated fatty acids, making them attractive for biotechnological applications. Only few studies exist aiming at the revelation of the evolutionary relationships of this interesting fungal group. This study includes the largest dataset of LSU and ITS sequences for more than 400 specimens containing 63 type or reference strains. Based on a LSU phylogram, fungal groups were defined and evaluated using ITS sequences and morphological features. Traditional morphology-based classification schemes...

A new genus of arboreal rat from West Java, Indonesia Naturalis
Musser, G.G..
Kadarsanomys nov. gen. is proposed for Rattus sodyi Bartels, 1937, and contrasted with Rattus and Lenothrix, two genera with which sodyi has been closely connected in the past. Kadarsanomys sodyi is an arboreal rat associated with bamboo on the forested volcanoes of West Java. Kadarsanomys has no close relatives and is the only murid genus endemic to a single island on the Sunda Shelf. Kadarsanomys, Pithecheir and Lenothrix comprise the only endemic genera of Sundaic murids.

DNA barcoding, phylogeny and systematics of Golden-backed frogs (Hylarana, Ranidae) of the Western Ghats-Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot, with the description of seven new species Naturalis
Biju, S.D.; Garg, S.; Mahony, S.; Wijayathilaka, N.; Senevirathne, G.; Meegaskumbura, M..
A systematic revision of the genus Hylarana in the Western Ghats-Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot is presented. Species delineation in Hylarana is complicated due to a lack of distinct colour differences or striking morphological characters, leading to potential misidentification. We conducted extensive surveys throughout the Western Ghats-Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot and performed multiple gene (16S, COI and Cytb) barcoding using 103 samples collected from cultivated land and natural habitats. Genetic distance comparisons and Neighbor Joining trees indicated the presence of at least 14 candidate species in the region, supported by taxa groupings for all three genetic markers. Utilising a combination of molecular and morphological data, we describe seven...

Notes on the herpetofauna of Surinam : VI. Resurrection of Hyla ornatissima Noble (Amphibia, Hylidae) and remarks on related species of green tree frogs from the Guiana area Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
In the present paper Hyla ornatissima Noble is removed from the synonymy of Hyla granosa Boulenger, and resurrected as a separate species on the basis of morphological, ecological and acoustical differences. Another relative of this group occurring in Guiana is Hyla sibleszi Rivero. Because of its superficial resemblance with these frogs Hyla punctata (Schneider), of another species-group, is also treated. All four species are extensively described, data on life history and distribution are given. H. sibleszi, so far only known from the type material and some associated specimens, is reported from several new localities in Venezuela and Guyana. It is suggested that the function of the intricate dorsal pattern of H. ornatissima serves to protect the animal...

Notes on the herpetofauna of Surinam : VII. Revision of the genus Atracus in Surinam, with the resurrection of two species (Colubridae, Reptilia) Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
A re-examination of old specimens of the genus Atractus, preserved in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie resulted in the discovery of syntypes of Brachyorrhos badius F. Boie, B. flammigerus F. Boie, B. schach F. Boie and Rabdosoma torquatus Dumeril, Bibron & Dumeril. Lectotypes for all these species are designated. B. flammigerus and B. schach have been considered synonyms of Atractus badius since 1837. This proved to be wrong, they turned out to be valid taxa exhibiting differences in scale counts, body size, hemipenial morphology and colour pattern. Among recently collected material from Surinam the recently described A. zidoki Gasc & Rodrigues was discovered and described on the basis of seven specimens. Both A. latifrons (Günther) and A....

Rearrangement of certain Glyphipterygidae sensu Meyrick, 1913, with descriptions of new taxa (Lepidoptera) Naturalis
Diakonoff, A..
In 1913, Edward Meyrick removed several genera from his compound family Yponomeutidae and united them in a new group, "Glyphipterygidae". After 1954, this name has been used generally, often in the emended spelling "Glyphipterigidae". The family name was not new but used by Meyrick in an entirely different sense. Former authors (Zeller, 1839; Stainton, 1854; Frey, 1856, etc.) indicated with the name "Glyphipterygidae" only one of the two main groups of Meyrick's enlarged concept, viz., the "Glyphipteryginae" or the "Glyphipterygidae sensu stricto". In spite of its existence during quite a long time, Meyrick's family " Glyphiteryginae" proved to be an unsatisfactory combination. In later years, especially recently, its highly heterogeneous character became...

Revision of Alyxia (Apocynaceae). Part 2: Pacific Islands and Australia Naturalis
Middleton, David J..
The genus Alyxia is revised for Australia and the islands of the Pacific Ocean as the second and final part of a complete revision of the genus. 39 species are recognised for this area of which three are new to science, two are new combinations and one is a new name. 14 species are found in Australia and its offshore territories, 21 species in New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands, and seven species in the other islands of the Pacific. There is relatively little overlap between regions: two species are found in Malesia and Australia; one species is found in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands; one species in Vanuatu and New Caledonia; and A. stellata is found in Australia, New Caledonia and into the Pacific as far as Hawaii and Henderson Island. Keys and...

Revision of the West Palaearctic Polistes Latreille, with the descriptions of two species: an integrative approach using morphology and DNA barcodes (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Naturalis
Schmid-Egger, C.; Achterberg, K. van; Neumeyer, R.; Morinière, J.; Schmidt, S..
The genus Polistes is revised for the West Palaearctic region based on morphology and DNA barcodes. The revision includes all known West Palaearctic species, raising the number of species in Europe to 14 and to 17 for the West Palaearctic realm. DNA barcodes were recovered from 15 species, 14 of which belong to the subgenus Polistes, and one, P. wattii, to the subgenus Gyrostoma. An integrative taxonomic approach combining morphology and molecular data (DNA barcoding) was employed to resolve longstanding taxonomic problems in this group. Two species, P. austroccidentalis van Achterberg & Neumeyer, sp. n. (= P. semenowi auctt.) from W and SW Europe and P. maroccanus Schmid-Egger, sp. n. from Morocco are described as new. Polistes bucharensis Erichson,...

Subspecies of Hypolepis rugosula (Dennstaedtiaceae; Pteridophyta) around the world: morphological and biogeographic perspectives Acta Botanica
Schwartsburd,Pedro Bond; Prado,Jefferson.
The "Hypolepis rugosula complex" has been the subject of great debate among pteridologists: some have considered H. rugosula a single subcosmopolitan (or circum-Antarctic) species, whereas others have considered it a species-complex, encompassing several species. In the 1920s and 1930s, four geographically distinct varietiesof H. rugosula were recognized. In this work, we present a new taxonomy (with new combinations and statuses, as well as typification and full synonymy), together with complete distribution data for the species, with an infraspecific classification based on morphological and biogeographic perspectives. Hypolepis rugosula occurs in southern temperate regions and high-elevation tropical regions of the Americas, Africa (including...

Systematics of the North American subterranean amphipod genus Bactrurus (Crangonyctidae) Naturalis
Koenemann, Stefan; Holsinger, John R..
Bactrurus Hay is a relatively small generic group that inhabits caves and related groundwater habitats in parts of eastern and central USA. Two field trips, conducted in the spring of 1999, yielded important new locality records that give us a better knowledge of the distribution of the genus. The examination of fresh samples as well as older collection material has resulted in descriptions of four new species. Based on these descriptions and redescriptions of three previously known species, the taxonomy of the genus is revised. In addition, a phylogenetic analysis using morphological data is employed to examine the relationship of Bactrurus to 12 selected crangonyctid taxa, including its potential sister genus Stygobromus Cope. Five epigean and hypogean...

Taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of the coral genera Australomussa and Parascolymia (Scleractinia, Lobophylliidae) ArchiMer
Arrigoni, Roberto; Richards, Zoe T.; Chen, Chaolun Allen; Baird, Andrew H.; Benzoni, Francesca.
Novel micromorphological characters in combination with molecular studies have led to an extensive revision of the taxonomy and systematics of scleractinian corals. In the present work, we investigate the macro- and micromorphology and the phylogenetic position of the genera Australomussa and Parascolymia, two monotypic genera ascribed to the family Lobophylliidae. The molecular phylogeny of both genera was addressed using three markers, the partial mitochondrial COI gene and the nuclear histone H3 and the ribosomal ITS region. Based on molecular data, Australomussa and Parascolymia belong to the Lobophylliidae and they cluster together with the genera Lobophyllia and Symphyllia within the same clade. While A. rowleyensis and P. vitiensis are closely...
